CRAFTING A TAILORED PROGRAM FOR
SAFETY LEADERSHIP TRANSFORMATION

The background.

As one of America's most recognized brands, this multinational e-commerce giant has an incredibly diverse collection of operational leaders, all with different backgrounds and safety experience. To help upskill this unique group, we were asked to design a program that felt made — just for them.

The challenge.

Our collaborator is a massive organization that experiences high turnover across their supply chain operations.

So to really make a positive impact on safety, the business realized the need to focus on those who have the most influence — their Operational Leaders. With this in mind, they asked us to create a program that would offer more than just the basics. It needed to provide leaders with both a consistent direction and essential skills, as well as an understanding of their role when it comes to safety.

In fact, we had to look beyond the surface, digging deep into how leaders could benefit both the wider business and their teams. That way, we could set them up to deliver — and own — safety excellence.

The APPROACH.

By using a human-centered design approach, we were able to test assumptions and gain the insights needed to form the foundations of an effective behavior-changing leadership program. We started by conducting workshops with both our EHS collaborator (voice of intent), as well as those who would participate in the program (voice of experience).

The program design also had to align with their Health & Safety Management System — making sure to cover all of the topics in a way that answered a crucial question: “What do I need to know and do as an Operational Leader?”

With an understanding of both the needs and learning outcomes, we developed a tailored, mixed-modality program that was able to provide participants with the right information, at the right time, and in the right way.

This came to life through eight e-learning experiences, two face-to-face workshops and multiple online check-ins. As a result, Operational Leaders gained new knowledge that could be put into practice right away.

The impact.

Feedback from the team has been that the program provides leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to elevate their safety experience.

As we expected, engagement in the learning and training has increased with the content designed to reduce overall cognitive load and save time — without removing any necessary information.
